Toyota GR86 first modifications - Suspension and Wheels

Toyota GR86 first modifications - Suspension and Wheels

After spending time with our GR86 in completely stock form, it quickly became clear where the platform could be developed. The fundamentals are excellent, but visually and dynamically there was plenty of room for improvement. With that in mind, the first modifications were always going to focus on stance and wheel fitment.

We’ve kicked things off with a set of Eibach US-spec lowering springs, paired with Rotiform RPS flow-formed wheels, both fitted over the factory dampers.

Eibach Lowering springs:

We opted for the US-spec Eibach Pro Kit springs due to the more aggressive drop compared to the European version. While the EU springs offer a 20mm reduction, the US-spec setup lowers the car by 30mm at the front and 25mm at the rear.

That additional drop allows the GR86 to sit much closer to the arches, giving the car a noticeably more purposeful stance and setting a better foundation for future exterior and aero modifications.

EU spec heights:

  • 25mm Front
  • 20mm Rear

U.S spec heights:

  • 30mm Front
  • 25mm Rear

RIDE QUALITY AND DRIVING IMPRESSIONS

Nathan notes that the Eibach Pro-Kit springs retain a ride quality that is broadly similar to stock, though slightly firmer. Over motorway speeds and sharper bumps, the car can feel a touch harsher and slightly bouncier compared to OEM.

The benefits are immediately noticeable, with sharper turn-in, reduced body roll and a lower centre of gravity that makes the car feel more planted through corners. For anyone prioritising performance and styling over absolute ride comfort, the trade-off is worthwhile.

Wheels:

The wheels chosen for this stage of the build are Rotiform RPS flow-formed monoblocks, finished in satin silver with a polished lip and centre bowl.

Inspired by the Enkei RPF1, the RPS offers lightweight construction, excellent brake clearance and strong JDM influence, which suits the GR86 perfectly.

Wheel specification:
18x8.5
+35 offset

Tyres

The wheels are wrapped in Nexen N Fera tyres in a 225/40 R18 size, offering a good balance between grip, comfort and daily usability.

WHY THIS MATTERS FOR THE BUILD

Lowering springs and wheels form the foundation of how the GR86 looks and feels. With the stance now dialled in and the arches properly filled, the car already feels more focused and resolved, creating the perfect base for the next stages of the build.
