THE GAME CHANGER: BMW Drops the G87 M2 xDrive

It’s the news we all knew was coming, but seeing it in black and white hits different. BMW M has officially pulled the sheets off the brand new G87 BMW M2 with M xDrive.

For the first time in the history of the baby M, power is going to all four wheels.

The G87 platform has already proven itself as a tuning monster, but this latest update changes the game entirely. We’re talking supercar slaying traction, clever new engine tech, and a 0-62 mph time that will make a lot of much more expensive machinery very nervous.

Here is everything you need to know about the upcoming 2026 BMW M2 xDrive.

0-62 in 3.7 Seconds: The Power of Four-Wheel Drive

Let’s get straight to the numbers that matter. The incoming M2 xDrive retains the phenomenal 3.0 litre twin turbo S58 straight six, pushing out a hefty 480 hp (353 kW).

But while the rear wheel drive car can sometimes fight for grip off the line, the xDrive model hooks up and flies.

  • 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h): 3.7 seconds (a massive 0.3s faster than the RWD version).
  • 0-62 mph (with 1-foot rollout): A blistering 3.4 seconds.
  • 0-124 mph (0-200 km/h): 12.8 seconds.
  • Top Speed: 155 mph standard, or 177 mph if you tick the box for the M Driver’s Package.

Power is managed via the standard 8 speed M Steptronic transmission. No manual option for the xDrive here, but with performance this brutal, the paddle shifters are where you'll want your hands anyway.

Don't Panic: It's Still a Drift Machine

We know what you’re thinking: “Is the M2 losing its soul?” In short: No. BMW’s M xDrive is inherently rear biased. In everyday driving, 100% of the power goes to the rear wheels. The front axle only wakes up and joins the party when the rears physically cannot deploy any more power to the tarmac.

Working alongside the Active M Differential, the car actively shuffles torque between the rear wheels to mimic that classic, agile, rear driven M feel.

The Magic Button: 2WD Mode

Just like its bigger brothers, the M3 and M4 xDrive, the new M2 allows you to go into the M Setup menu, turn DSC off, and select 2WD mode. This completely decouples the front axle, sending 100% of the power to the rear tires for pure, unadulterated tyre shredding fun.

Which G87 M2 is For You?

With the arrival of all wheel drive, the G87 line up is officially split into three distinct flavours. Here is how they stack up depending on what you want from your driver's car:

1. RWD G87 M2 (Manual) — The Purist's Choice

This is the configuration for the drivers who want ultimate engagement. There is a reason this is the spec we chose for our own shop car (@rtwenty3's G87 M2). It's all about that classic, old school M car recipe: three pedals, a manual shifter, and 480 hp going strictly to the rear tyres. It's rewarding, involving, and a dying breed in 2026.

2. RWD G87 M2 (Automatic) — The Ultimate '1 Car' Solution

If you want the classic rear wheel drive dynamics but need a car that can effortlessly tackle the daily commute, the RWD auto is the sweet spot. The 8 speed box keeps the engine perfectly in its power band when you’re on it, but plays the role of a comfortable, refined cruiser when you just want to get home.

The new kid on the block. The xDrive version is for the drivers who want point and shoot supremacy. It erases the limitations of bad weather, turns launch control into a violent event, and gives you the confidence to deploy all 480 hp whether it's a greasy winter morning or a damp track day. It's the ultimate year round hyper-hatch hunter.

BMW Pre Chamber Ignition Technology

Introducing 'BMW M Ignite' Tech

It’s not just the drivetrain that's new. Mid-2026 marks the debut of BMW M Ignite technology a patented pre chamber combustion process derived straight from BMW’s racing program.

What does that mean for you? It significantly reduces fuel consumption under high loads and helps the car meet strict EU7 emissions regulations, all without sacrificing that linear, high revving S58 power delivery or its signature aggressive exhaust note.

If you love track days, this is a massive win. Lower fuel consumption under heavy load means you can stay out hot lapping for longer before needing to hit the pumps.

To celebrate the launch, BMW is introducing some stunning new colour options. Most notably, BMW Individual Borusan Turkish Blue will be available on an M2 for the very first time. Expect this vibrant, metallic shade to highlight the G87's muscular, wide arched stance perfectly.

The car will sit on staggered 19 inch front and 20 inch rear M light alloy wheels as standard, with sticky track tyres available from the factory. Stopping power is handled by massive six piston fixed calipers up front.

When Can You Get One?

Production is scheduled to kick off in August 2026 at BMW's San Luis Potosí plant in Mexico, with the official market launch slated for late summer 2026.

As the biggest selling high performance M car of last year, adding all weather usability and hypercar matching launch control to the M2 is only going to skyrocket its popularity. It’s the ultimate year round daily driver.

What's Next?

You already know that as soon as the M2 xDrive lands, the AUTOID team will be getting our hands on one through our die-hard BMW fan customers. With four wheel drive traction, the tuning potential for this platform is about to go through the roof. Think carbon fibre styling, aggressive drops, and even more power.

Stay tuned to the blog for updates on our upcoming styling development plans for the xDrive.

What do you think of the news? Is xDrive a massive win for the M2, or should it have stayed RWD only? Let us know in the comments below!
