Plateless (Formerly Magna plates) Magnetic License Plate Holder

Plateless (Formerly Magna plates) Magnetic License Plate Holder

If you’ve been around AUTOID for a while, you’ll already know Plateless well. It’s one of our longest-standing and best-selling products, particularly popular with enthusiasts who attend shows, events or simply want a cleaner front-end look.

What some customers may not realise is that Plateless was previously known as Magna Plates. The product itself hasn’t changed, but the brand has evolved.

This post explains what Plateless is, why the rebrand happened, and why it remains one of the most practical modifications you can make.

What Is Plateless?

Plateless is a magnetic front number plate system that allows you to remove and refit your front plate in seconds, without drilling into the bumper or using permanent fixings.

Instead of screws, the system uses strong neodymium magnets mounted discreetly behind the bumper and within the number plate itself. Once fitted, the plate snaps into position securely and sits exactly where it should.

When you want it off, for a show, photos, detailing or track use, you simply pull it away.

Why Was Magna Plates Rebranded to Plateless?

The rebrand from Magna Plates to Plateless was about clarity and identity, not a change in product or ownership.

The new name better reflects what the product actually offers:
the ability to run plate-on when you need to, plate-off when you don’t.

Importantly:

  • The design is the same
  • The magnets are the same
  • The quality and fitment are unchanged
  • Installation and usage remain identical

If you previously bought Magna Plates, you already own what is now called Plateless.

Why Plateless Is So Popular

Plateless has become a go-to upgrade because it solves a very specific problem in a simple, reversible way.

  • Clean front-end styling
Many modern cars suffer visually once a front plate is installed, especially those with aggressive bumpers or carbon aero. Plateless lets you remove the plate without leaving holes, brackets or sticky residue behind.

  • No drilling or permanent modification
Nothing is drilled into the bumper. The system is fully reversible, making it ideal for leased cars or owners who want to preserve resale value.

  • Secure in everyday driving
When fitted correctly, the magnets hold the plate firmly in place at road speeds. This isn’t a temporary show-only solution. It’s designed for daily use.

  • Perfect for shows, events and content
If you attend shows, events or photo shoots, being able to remove the plate in seconds makes a huge difference.

How Plateless Is Installed

Installation is straightforward and can be done at home.

  • Magnets are mounted behind the bumper using supplied fixings
  • Matching magnets are bonded to the rear of the number plate
  • The plate aligns automatically when offered up to the bumper

Once installed, there’s no adjustment required. The plate sits consistently every time.

Important fitment note:

Plateless relies on magnetic mounting, so it’s essential that the tailgate or panel you’re fitting the rear plate to is made from steel. Some vehicles use aluminium or composite tailgates, which magnets will not adhere to. If your car does not have a steel tailgate, you’ll need to order two front kits instead, using the front mounting solution for both the front and rear plates. We always recommend checking your tailgate material before ordering to ensure you receive the correct kit.

Is Plateless Legal?

This is an important point.

In the UK, your vehicle must display a front number plate on public roads. Plateless does not change that requirement. It simply gives you the flexibility to remove the plate when the car is not being driven on the road, such as at shows, during photography or when detailing.

As with any modification, it’s the owner’s responsibility to ensure the vehicle remains road legal when in use.

Why We Continue to Recommend Plateless at AUTOID

Plateless has remained one of our best sellers for a reason. It’s one of those rare products that:

  • Solves a real-world problem
  • Improves aesthetics instantly
  • Requires no permanent modification
  • Works across a huge range of vehicles

We’ve fitted it to countless customer cars and our own builds, from BMW M cars to performance estates and sports cars.

The name may have changed, but the reason we recommend it hasn’t.

Final Thoughts

If you knew Magna Plates, you already know Plateless.

The rebrand hasn’t changed the product, the quality or the functionality. It’s simply a clearer name for a solution enthusiasts have trusted for years.

If you want a cleaner front end without committing to permanent changes, Plateless remains one of the smartest, simplest upgrades you can make.
