FAQ
Is Akrapovič road legal in the UK?
Yes. The Slip-On Line and Evolution Line systems we stock are ECE Type Approved under regulation R59 and are road-legal in the UK with the supplied dB killers fitted. They will pass an MOT noise test on standard OBD parameters and do not trigger fault codes or engine warning lights when paired with the Akrapovič valve controller. The Slip-On Race Line and Evolution Race systems are decatted track-only products and will not pass an MOT in road-legal trim — these are clearly marked as Race Line on the product page and we flag any Race Line order at checkout. If you're unsure which version of an Akrapovič exhaust system you're looking at, the part number prefix is the giveaway: S-PO/TI denotes a road-homologated titanium system, S-PO/T (without the "I") denotes a Race Line.
Does an Akrapovič exhaust void my BMW or Porsche warranty?
No, not in the way most people fear. Under UK consumer law, the manufacturer cannot void your entire warranty simply because you've fitted an aftermarket exhaust — they can only refuse a warranty claim where the modified part is the proven cause of the failure. Akrapovič systems are designed to bolt onto OE mounts without permanent modification to the chassis, and BMW M Performance and Porsche themselves have used Akrapovič as their factory exhaust partner since the early 2000s, so the dealer networks treat them as a known quantity. The OE exhaust itself is generally considered a serviceable component rather than a warrantied one. Akrapovič's own two-year manufacturer warranty covers the new system from date of supply and is honoured directly through AutoID — you don't need to ship anything back to Slovenia.
What's the difference between Slip-On Line and Evolution Line?
The Slip-On Line replaces only the rear muffler section of your exhaust; the Evolution Line replaces the full system from the catalytic converters back, including the link pipes and rear muffler. Practically, that means the Slip-On is a 1–2 hour bolt-on with no remap required, saves around 4–7 kg over the OEM titanium system, adds 3–5 dB of tone, and costs roughly £3,500–£6,500 depending on chassis. The Evolution Line is a 3–5 hour install, saves 8–12 kg, adds 5–8 dB, unlocks 5–15 bhp on turbocharged applications (more with a stage 1 map), and costs roughly £6,500–£9,500. If you only ever plan to do an exhaust, go Slip-On. If this is the first step in a wider build that will eventually include link pipes, headers and a tune, start with Evolution and skip the upgrade tax later.
Does an Akrapovič exhaust actually add power?
Yes, but the gains depend heavily on your chassis. On naturally aspirated cars like the 911 GT3 or M3 E92, a full Evolution Line plus Evolution Headers will typically free 8–15 bhp by lowering back-pressure and improving exhaust scavenging. On turbocharged cars like the G80 M3, G82 M4, F90 M5, 911 Turbo and Cayenne Turbo, the immediate gain from a Slip-On Line is modest (3–5 bhp), but the lighter, lower-restriction full Evolution system unlocks meaningful headroom when paired with a stage 1 ECU map — typically 25–40 bhp gain across the package versus stock. The other, less-quoted benefit is weight: an Akrapovič titanium system saves 8–12 kg from the rear of the car, which is felt in steering response far more than the dyno graph shows.
How loud is an Akrapovič exhaust, and what does the dB killer do?
Akrapovič road-legal systems add roughly 3–5 dB to your stock exhaust note for the Slip-On Line and 5–8 dB for the Evolution Line, measured under WOT at the tailpipe — comfortably within UK MOT noise limits and ECE-R59 homologation. The dB killer is a removable acoustic insert that sits inside the rear muffler; with it fitted, the system runs in homologated, road-legal mode. With it removed (a 5-minute job, no tools required on most chassis), the system runs in its louder, fully track-spec voice — typically another 4–6 dB on top, plus a noticeably more aggressive overrun and crackle. If your car has the Akrapovič valve controller fitted, you also get full electronic control of the OE exhaust valves from a phone app, so you can run quiet on a 6am start and full song on a B-road without touching the dB killer at all.
