The 2025 BMW G90 M5 & G99 M5 Touring - Reviews and key information

BMW's M division is finally dipping its toes into the world of hybrid saloon M cars, and rumour has it, this could be the fastest M car ever.

The new 2025 BMW G90 M5 & G99 M5 Touring aren't officially out in the wild yet (we'll have to wait a bit longer for that), but we've got an idea of some key details.

Plus, some talented people over at Carwow, have whipped up some great mock-ups to tease us with.

Big shoutout to Carwow for these mock-ups that they cooked up using sneaky spy shots and BMW's teaser pics. So, how do you feel about the potential look of the all-new 2025 G90 M5?

The Exterior

BMW G90 M5 renders

The upcoming 2025 BMW G90 M5 is shaping up to be the most extreme-looking M5 to date. Despite sharing its foundation with the regular new BMW 5 Series, almost every exterior panel will receive a distinctive overhaul.

BMW G90 M5 front end

At the front, the G90 M5 boasts oversized open intake ducts reminiscent of the G87 M2, designed to facilitate ample airflow to the radiator. This aggressive design choice, while visually striking, does raise concerns about potential vulnerability to debris

Furthermore, the front bumper incorporates vents positioned beneath the headlights, dedicated to brake cooling, along with a compact front splitter that contributes to enhanced downforce.

Following in the footsteps of the new G87 M2, the G90 M5 flaunts flared wheel arches, bestowing a more commanding presence and allowing for an impressively broad rear wheelbase.

Now, turning our attention to the rear of the vehicle, it's possible that the new G90 M5 will incorporate slightly dialed-down iterations of the G87 M2's rear corners, complete with tall vertical-style vents on each side.

Expect a discreet rear lip spoiler and a subtly designed rear diffuser as well, though it's almost certain that we will offer a more upscale and aggressive carbon fibre upgrade for enthusiasts.

Perhaps the most notable detail: the new M5 is set to retain BMW's iconic quad tailpipe arrangement, even with its hybrid powertrain.

The Interior

While full interior details remain under wraps, spy shots offer a glimpse into the potential cabin design as seen here from car magazine.

Engine & Performance

The new G90 M5 going hybrid. Well, that's pretty much par for the course nowadays. It's a trend that's sweeping through the industry, even hitting the likes of the new C63 AMG by Mercedes.

But don't worry, unlike Mercedes' move to a 4-cylinder setup, the new G90 M5 isn't going down that road. It's hanging onto BMW's signature S68 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8, with a hefty electric motor and a slick 4-wheel drive system plucked straight from the new BMW XM SUV.

Power

Given that the new G90 M5 will be adopting the powertrain straight from the XM SUV, it's a good bet that the G90 will be in the ballpark of the XM Label Red, boasting about 750hp.

But here's where things could get even more interesting: if BMW decides to inject the new M5 with the same tweaked version of the outgoing F90 M5 CS' 635hp 4.4-liter V8 and then pairs it with the 197hp electric motor, we might just be looking at G90 M5 Competition or CS variants pushing out a whopping 830hp.

Considering the outgoing F90 M5 CS managed to hit a remarkable 0-60mph time in under 3 seconds, it's quite plausible that the upcoming G90 M5 could even push the envelope further, potentially approaching a jaw-dropping 2.5 seconds for the 0-60 sprint.

That would firmly plant the 2025 G90 M5 as the hybrid performance king with record breaking potential.

G90 M5 vs. The Competition

The G90 M5 isn't alone in the high-performance luxury sedan arena. It's sure to face stiff competition from established rivals like the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance and the upcoming Audi RS7 e-tron GT. How will the G90 M5 stack up? Speculation is rife, and comparisons will be inevitable once official specs are revealed.

Weight

While the projected power numbers are undeniably exciting, it's crucial to take into account that the new G90 M5 is likely to carry a considerably heftier weight compared to its predecessor.

This can be attributed to the substantial bulk of the hybrid powertrain. For perspective, the XM SUV employing a similar powertrain registers a weight exceeding 2,700 kg.

With this in mind, leaked figure suggest on Bimmerpost estimate the new G90 M5's weight somewhere in the range of 5,368 lb (2,435 kg). A considerable increase. This additional weight could impact agility, although BMW's engineering prowess is sure to impress. Will they be able to overcome the physics of a heavier car?

Handling and Chassis

Reports suggest significant upgrades to the G90 M5's handling prowess. We can expect an improved version of the all-wheel steering system for sharper response and agility. Additionally, active anti-roll bars with automatic ride-height control are rumored, promising a dynamic driving experience that balances comfort and stability. Upgraded braking power, likely interacting with the car's electronics for energy recuperation, is also anticipated.

Similar to previous M5 iterations, the G90 M5 is expected to offer a range of driver-selectable steering and braking calibrations, allowing for a personalised driving experience.

Taking a look at the Nürburgring prototype testing shots by CarSpyMedia you can notice how the G90 M5 shows it's weight by the lean into transitions.

Price

While there's still no official word on this, it's pretty much a given that the new M5 will carry a higher price tag compared to the current flagship 5 Series, the i5 M60, which sits at around £98,000.

Drawing on technology from the BMW XM, it's reasonable to anticipate that the 2025 G90 M5 might fall within the range of £120,000 to £150,000.

This also means that potential Competition and CS iterations down the line could potentially fetch prices as high as £180,000. Ouch indeed...

For precise pricing details, along with confirmed specifications and features, we'll have to hang tight until BMW officially launches the new M5 later in the year.

On a thrilling note, BMW has already let the cat out of the bag about an upcoming Touring version - marking the return of an M5 touring model for the first time since the E61 generation back in the late 2000s!
