The car had no other modifications. As you can see, power and torque are increased through a large portion of the rpm range. This translates on the road to increased part throttle and full throttle response with the car pulling much more eagerly to the redline. The testing was done on the same day back-to-back and temperatures were monitored to ensure consistency. The carbon pods shroud the reverse mounted filter and smoothly shape the airflow down to the intake tubes. This geometry invokes the Venturi effect where the airflow accelerates whilst maintaining laminar conditions. Each tube has an integrated MAF sensor mount which is CNC machined from aluminium. The shorter left side tube smoothly transitions from the carbon housing down to the turbo inlet tube. The longer right side intake tube has to clear the fan shroud and strut brace. To do so we employed the same principle as the stock tube in changing the cross section from a circle at the turbo inlet tube to an oval for clearance over the shroud, then back to a circle at the filter housing end. Since the airbox is positioned next to the exhaust manifold it is crucial for the filter to be fully sealed so we designed the airbox to encapsulate the filter and at the same time provide a large internal volume. To seal the intake tube we have designed a laser cut plate with a rubber sealing strip which secures to the airbox. The intake tube passes through the plate and the rubber seal ensures heated air does not enter the airbox. To further minimise heat soak, there is an additional heat shield with a gold reflective layer on the exhaust manifold side which effectively combats the radiant heat transfer. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eHaving a fully sealed airbox results in the problem of having a restriction for the cold air feed. The stock airbox draws air from a single duct which extends to the front bumper area. During development we identified another area to draw cold air from which was a gap between the wheel arch and the chassis on which the airbox sits. To utilise this feed we extended a scoop at the back of our design which protrudes into the wheel arch and can even be seen after installation behind the front wheel. The tube smoothly tapers down to the stock turbo inlet to ensure airflow remains as laminar as possible. The carbon pod shrouds the reverse mounted filter and smoothly shapes the airflow down to the MAF section which then connects to the stock inlet tube. This changes the flow path from the OEM airbox where airflow enters the front of the airbox, changes direction by 90 degrees to travel through the panel filter and then changes direction again by 90 degrees to move through the MAF section. Our system is a lot more direct with airflow entering the front of the filter housing and and moving into the MAF section without any abrupt direction changes.
