The RS5\/RS4 engine bay becomes heat soaked very quickly so simply having an open cone system would result in better airflow but with higher inlet temperatures. We therefore completely re-engineered the inlet track from the turbo inlet pipe to the front grill with a highly efficient sealed system. The restrictive stock airbox and flexible plastic inlet pipe have been replaced with a Venturi filter housing and a duct system with smooth transitions. Furthermore, by removing the convoluted stock inlet pipe and replacing it with our one-piece Venturi housing and solid tube, the airflow is much smoother as it enters the turbo inlet tube. The testing was done on the same day back-to-back and temperatures were monitored to ensure consistency. The carbon pod shrouds the reverse mounted filter and smoothly shapes the airflow down to the turbo tube which it matches in diameter to the turbo tube. This is a key feature of the intake design where we have removed the requirement for a convoluted rubber hose between the intake and the engine. The filter housing and integrated tube extends all the way to the stock turbo tube and by mounting this to the engine, the entire filter housing moves with the engine. Each tube has an integrated MAF sensor mount which is CNC machined from aluminium. The shorter left side tube smoothly transitions from the carbon housing down to the turbo inlet tube. The longer right side intake tube has to clear the fan shroud and strut brace. To do so we employed the same principle as the stock tube in changing the cross section from a circle at the turbo inlet tube to an oval for clearance over the shroud, then back to a circle at the filter housing end. Our aim was to address 2 main criteria: 1) Increased flow rate. 2) Smooth Airflow. The first objective was met by utilising all of the limited space available in the RS6 engine bay which was heavily restricted by the underside of the hood. Our solution was to completely redesign the entire airbox which maximised volume, increased flow entry openings and created a more favourable filter angle to the turbos. Furthermore we dramatically increased the size of the turbo inlets by as much as 85% when measuring the cross sectional area at the openings. The second objective was met by designing an organically shaped system with a custom rounded panel filter to ensure the airflow path contained no sharp corners and therefore allowed for the flow to remain laminar. With smooth transitions from the filter to the turbo inlets, our intake minimises the formation of turbulence and therefore the turbos are able to operate more efficiently. We partnered with BMC for a bespoke filter element to ensure that the filtration area is as large as possible whilst keeping airflow clean.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eWith all objectives met, our C8 RS6 intake system delivers on all fronts and allows for the turbos to generate boost more efficiently. This results in an improved throttle response and significant power gains, independently tested which increase with higher states of tune. They tested the car with the stock map and also their own stage 1 remap. They ran the car 4 times in 4th gear with the stock airbox and then swapped over to the Eventuri while the car remained on the dyno. The car was then run again in 4th gear 4 times. Testing was all done on the same day and no other changes were made. The graph below shows the highest power from the stock airbox vs highest power run from the Eventuri intake. Both were the first dyno pulls with subsequent pulls reducing in power due to heat soak. As can be seen below the intake provides a significant gain in performance throughout the RPM range with the stock map and more so with the stage 1 remap. We tested the turbo inlets by themselves and then also the complete assembly with the airbox and turbo inlets together for both the stock system and the Eventuri. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eTesting just the inlets alone shows a 58% increase in flow rate over stock. This is due to the way our inlets increase in diameter at the airbox side which allows for a much lower restriction. Testing the complete system with the airbox shows an increase in flow rate of 90% over stock which is a significant increase. This shows just how restrictive the stock airbox is, with the flow rate dropping by over 25% when adding the stock airbox to the stock inlets. In contrast the flow rate drops by only 11% when adding the Eventuri intake to the Eventuri inlets. We maintained as large a volume as possible all the way to the front of the engine bay and derestricted the front of the duct by creating an opening just behind the bumper where the bonnet would close. This area of the engine bay stays at ambient temperatures while the car is in motion and so the intake is able to draw in air without being restricted to the small opening behind the grill. We did not extend the duct to the other side of the engine bay to use the second opening in the grill simply because of the abrupt flow angle and the restriction in space between the engine and the bonnet catch. Furthermore, using the second opening would stop cold air from entering the engine bay to assist with reducing overall heat soak. The OEM rear tube has a sharp internal bend radius and at high flow rates, this can cause unwanted turbulence which can affect the efficiency of the turbo. We redesigned the rear tube to allow for a smoother bend which also allowed for a more optimum positioning of the filter housing. In order to cope with the heat at the back of the engine, this tube is made from a thermoplastic with glass fiber reinforcement. There is also a CNC machined reinforcement ring at the rear connection where the clamp would be secured. This prevents distortion under heavy clamping pressure - as used in the OEM tube as well. Since the airbox is positioned next to the exhaust manifold it is crucial for the filter to be fully sealed so we designed the airbox to encapsulate the filter and at the same time provide a large internal volume. To seal the intake tube we have designed a laser cut plate with a rubber sealing strip which secures to the airbox. The intake tube passes through the plate and the rubber seal ensures heated air does not enter the airbox. To further minimise heat soak, there is an additional heat shield with a gold reflective layer on the exhaust manifold side which effectively combats the radiant heat transfer. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eHaving a fully sealed airbox results in the problem of having a restriction for the cold air feed. The stock airbox draws air from a single duct which extends to the front bumper area. During development we identified another area to draw cold air from which was a gap between the wheel arch and the chassis on which the airbox sits. To utilise this feed we extended a scoop at the back of our design which protrudes into the wheel arch and can even be seen after installation behind the front wheel. Unlike most aftermarket intakes we maximised the size of our intake tube, the OEM inlet tube has an internal diameter of 80.8mm or 3.2” at the filter end. Our tube for cars built after November 2018 has an internal diameter of 109mm or 4.3”. This equates to a massive 82% increase in cross sectional area over stock. The tube smoothly tapers down to the stock turbo inlet to ensure airflow remains as laminar as possible.
